ELKHART LAKE, WI—RSR Motorsports drivers are optimistic about this weekend’s GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Road America. A combination of well-prepared cars and past success at the 4-mile track has given the team a lot to look forward to.
The 2011 race at Road America was a highlight of the season for RSR Motorsports. The team took three top-ten finishes in the Street Tuner class. Owen Trinkler and Sarah Cattaneo finished fourth, Ron Farmer and Jason Hart were seventh, and Dicky Riegel teamed up with NASCAR star Ken Schrader to take tenth.
Those results have RSR Motorsports looking forward to this year’s round. Farmer is especially excited about turning laps in the No. 196 US LED Honda Civic Si. He and co-driver Jason Hart debuted the car two months ago, and they have been impressed with its performance so far.
“We’ve got a good car. The Honda is easy to drive, and it fits well with my skill set. The car has already proven to be competitive,” Farmer says. He adds, “I’m really looking forward to Road America because it’s a great track, and it’s a track that I think we can do well on, especially in the Honda.”
Trinkler and Corey Fergus won round four at New Jersey Motorsports Park in the No. 197 Honda Civic Si. After finishing fourth at Road America last year in a MINI Cooper S, Trinkler is looking for another win. “I think we have a shot at a victory. The Honda should perform well at Road America. I really like that track, and I think we’ve got a good package going there this year. It’s a home track for Corey—he’s got a lot of time there—so that’s another point in our favor,” Trinkler says.
Fergus first raced at Road America in 2009, competing in the Sports 2000 class at the SCCA June Sprints. He won his race, then came back later that year to take second during the Runoffs. Since that time, Fergus has amassed another win, two seconds and a third at Road America.
“It’s my favorite track. It’s not really technical, it’s a real horsepower track, but there’s just something about it,” Fergus says. “The area is beautiful, and I think that’s a lot of the reason it’s my favorite track. Canada Corner is my favorite area: you feel like you’re in the forest.”
In addition to the No. 196 and 197, RSR Motorsports will also field the No. 195 MINI Cooper S of Mark Congleton, Chris Puskar and Dicky Riegel. Kyle Gimple will team up with Randall Smalley in the No. 198 MINI Cooper S.
The Road America 200 is a rare evening race for RSR Motorsports. It begins at 7:15p.m. on Friday, June 22. The 2.5-hour race will be broadcast on SPEED on Sunday, July 8, at noon ET.
